Materials Manager

Position Description:


Reports To: President/Vice President Summary - Job Description/Responsibilities

Responsible to manage all aspects of materials flow and to maintain control and accuracy over all goods inventories, including all transactions, purchasing process, procurement, planning, scheduling, cost, warehouse, receiving, and outgoing freight and shipping. This position is also responsible to develop and manage all supplier relationships.

Directly supervises:

Purchasing, Shipping and Receiving departments.

Essential Functions

  1. Develop and maintain a process for an accurate inventory control system with a minimum 96% accuracy. Optimize inventory levels, storage, and organization.
  2. Establish cost savings initiatives to achieve sales goals.
  3. Performs analysis of customer demand, sales forecasts and historical material usage.
  4. Coordinate with cross-functional business teams to develop the best economic strategy for cost reduction and continuous improvement.
  5. Establish and implement methods and best practices related to the systems and process that support inventory forecasting, purchasing, and material control.
  6. Develop and execute a sourcing strategy to meet the company’s business growth and sourcing requirements.
  7. Identify, develop and manage effective relationships with existing and potential suppliers of goods and services to meet the established cost, quality and delivery targets.
  8. Establish, implement, and manage system to evaluate, monitor and report supplier scorecard performance.
  9. Adhere to established company policies, procedures, terms and conditions and legal matters that affect purchasing policies.
  10. Responsible for accuracy of inventory counts by implementing and managing, in conjunction with Finance, an inventory control system, capable of identifying discrepancies in inventory counts and taking corrective action to guard against inconsistencies in the future.
  11. Achieves financial objectives by working with management group to prepare the materials budget, schedule expenditures, analyze variances and initiate corrective actions.
  12. Participates as a member of the management team in making cross-functional operational decisions.
  13. Participates in meetings to resolve quality issues working with both internal and external resources.
  14. Collaborate with Estimating, Manufacturing, Sales and Quality to achieve cost reduction and sales targets.
  15. Maintains a safe and healthy work environment by implementing, maintaining and aligning company policies that adhere to local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulations.

Knowledge, skills and Abilities:

  1. Maintain and provide current understanding of industry best practices and technology trends in the industry.
  2. Continuously stay abreast of new and improved products pertaining to our industry.
  3. Identify tools, processes and metrics to optimize supplier value.
  4. Leads by example and motivates people so as to create a challenging, empowering, and collaborative working environment.
  5. Good technical writing, documentation, and record keeping skills.
  6. Good analytical problem solving ability.
  7. Ability to contribute in a cross functional collaborative environment.
  8. Ability to leverage metrics and other tools to drive supplier performance.


  1. Experience in purchasing or materials management in a manufacturing environment.
  2. Experience in total quality, six sigma, helpful.
  3. Working knowledge and understanding of systems and their use in a manufacturing environment.
  4. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
  5. Ability to demonstrate solid written and oral communication skills.
  6. Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain, Engineering, or related Business program preferred.

Work Environment

Temperatures may fluctuate with seasons. Noise level is moderate to loud. Much of the work is self-paced. Smoke free work place. Drug free work place.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. The Purchasing department hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The purchasing department must have staff coverage during this entire time frame.


Requires travel to implement inventory strategies among our four plant locations.
